Jewel of the day: Meyle and Mayer plique a jour owl locket

This is a gorgeous and rare sterling and plique a jour enamel locket. Plique enamel is the most fragile, as each cell is filled with translucent glass and the result is like a stained glass window. It’s not all that common to find one in such good condition, with no breaks or cracks to the enamel. It’s possible there was a mirror inside at one point. The owl is holding a natural baroque pearl in its claws. Set with the dragonfly mark for Meyle and Mayer of Pforzheim, Germany. Likely late Arts and Crafts/early Art Nouveau period. This own has since flown off to a new home…
