Thoughts on jewelry, accessories and whatever else takes my fancy

Jewel of the day: Eddie Borgo silk tassel earrings

Sometimes you just want earring drama without the weight that often comes with rhinestones or other bling. Eddie Borgo provides the look with a light and still effective pair of five inch long silver and silk tassel earrings. Perfect for a breezy summer night. Available for USD $440 at Kirna Zabete.

Jewel of the day: Stephen Webster minor bleeding heart necklace

British jeweller Stephen Webster explores various themes in his collections and they often have very dark nuances. His minor bleeding heart necklace (not sure if there is a major version) shows a dagger through a ruby studded heart. It’s made of 18k white gold with pave diamonds and rubies, and includes a 17 inch gold chain. Availabe at Bergdorf Goodman at USD $3250.

Jewel of the day: Henri J. Sillam green turquoise and diamond Iduna necklace

This gorgeous and vibrant green turquoise graduated bead necklace has a diamond clasp set in rhodium plated 18k gold. Founded in France in 1835, Henri J. Sillam is based in Vienna and has shops there as well as in Salzburg, Beverly Hills, Hong Kong, Paris. Ecommerce is coming to their site soon, but for now, you can only browse the eye candy.

Jewel of the day: Alexandre Reza

This is more of a jeweller of the day, really. Alexandre Reza was known for his haute joaillerie designs and exclusive Paris salon. Reza was stricken with Alzheimer’s Disease and his shop was shuttered in 2008.

Reza collected the finest of the finest stones and eventually designed his own pieces.  Recently, his son and wife reopened, on Place Vendome, using his stock of oustanding gems and drawings. There is also a new Assouline book coming, written by the fantastic Vivienne Becker. (In keeping with the high end nature of its subject, the book sells for $1000 and is packaged in a jeweller’s suede clamshell box.)

I wrote about these earrings in 2010; they sold for 500,000 Swiss francs above estimate, with a hammer price of 1,762, 500. A spectacular blue and white diamond crossover ring by Reza can be seen here.

Jewel of the day: LaRuicci Maxaniello a Cubo ring

This ring says, “Don’t mess with me, where’s that drink I ordered,” and “Look – DON’T touch” all at once. Love.

It’s got a 2.5 inch dome on top of the shank and is available in 18k gold or silver plated metal (now if they made it in black … swoon). You can buy it from designer LaRuicci for US $320. Be sure and tip the bar man on your way out.

Jewel of the day: Robyn Rhodes Esta necklace

Robyn Rhodes is a celeb favourite who comes by those connections honestly. As a former celebrity assistant, she probably knows well what it is that they want. The deep azure blue of this necklace just says summer to me. It can be customized with variations in the stones and chain used; it retails for approximately US $94.

Jewel of the day: Melinda Maria Galaxy Bling ring

I adore the Sara ring made by Yossi Harari – to the point that I had a gold and rose cut diamond version made for me in India (the Harari ring topped out at over $10k, while mine cost me about $1200).

What I love about a lot of Harari’s jewellery is the combination of the blackened metal with diamonds, stones and yellow gold. Harari’s pieces are made in Turkey; Indian polki jewellery also uses these visual techniques. Melinda Maria offers this look for less, in gold plated metal and cubic zirconia, for a wallet-friendly US $156. So tempting…

Jewel of the day: Nicolina Royale black leather rose brooch

Again, designs are reminding me of designs that have gone before. In this case, Nicolina Royale’s black leather rose brooch is reminiscent of Tobias Wong’s bullet proof kevlar black rose pin.

This long-stemmed version is made with leather and sterling silver and available from Ron Robinson for US $185.

Jewel of the day: Yasuko Azuma diamond tiny disc necklace

Coloured diamonds are very pretty but often out of reach price-wise. This sweet and small (1/4 of an inch) sterling silver necklace by Yasuko Azuma  is set with eight round brilliant cut diamonds. The blackened metal of the sterling disc really sets them off nicely; comes with a 16 inch chain and is available from Palas Jewelers for USD $295.

Jewel of the day: Katie Diamond Jewelry Yasmin diamond necklace

Maybe I’m just seeing patterns again and again this week, but this Yasmin necklace by Katie Diamond Jewelry looks a bit like the Alhambra clover shape made so famous by Van Cleef & Arpels, and and used by Heidi Klum in her pieces for Mouawad and some of the motifs in Paloma Picasso’s Venezia collection for Tiffany. I guess it begs the question, how unique is a clover or a circle or a form?

Here, the shape is outlined in diamonds set in 14k gold, and available online for US $2070. And it would probably look great layered with any of the above designs.
