Jewel of the day: Eddie Borgo Peaked Link Pendant Necklace

I’m so used to seeing Eddie Borgo and thinking pyramid studded pieces, that I did a double take when I came across this necklace.

I like the deco looking links, and the use of green, a favourite deco accent colour, really adds to this. I also like the fact that he mixed semi-precious stones – howlite,  jade and onyx – with 18k yellow gold plated brass. The pendant measures  3 1/4″ long and the necklace is 21″ long by 1 1/8″ wide.

This is available for USD $1500 at Forty Five Ten.

Jewel of the day: Leah Alexandra Labradorite Gold Filled Bracelet

There is something very elegant and understated about this bangle bracelet by Leah Alexandra. Made with a Labradorite stone as its centre piece (so each bracelet will vary slightly) the site notes it is set in a 14k gold filled vermeil bezel. I am assuming the rest is just gold filled but it’s not clear.

From the designer’s web site: “Leah’s jewellery is timeless, fresh and versatile with pieces that will compliment anything from jeans and a T-shirt to a wedding dress! Materials used in the line included Sterling Silver, 14 Karat Gold Fill, 24 Karat Gold Vermeil, and carefully hand-selected gemstones and freshwater pearls. All jewellery is handmade in Vancouver, just a short stroll from the beach.”

This is a very reasonable USD $98 and can be bought from the site.

Jewel of the day: Vicente Gracia El Gran Verde Ring

There is a whole lot of whimsy in this very large ring by Vicente Gracia. This is a one-of-a-kind gem made with gold, silver and enamel, and set with rubies and diamonds. The price starts at £7,775 as it is a bespoke piece.

You can read more about the Spanish-born Gracia here; his work is an intriguing mix of fantasy, unique gems and settings. There is a large selection of items for sale on the CoutureLab site.

Jewel of the day: L. Erickson Linear Link Earrings

These are fun, inexpensive and light to wear earrings that mimic natural horn are made by L. Erickson. They come in a range of different colours, and measure 2 1/4″ long and 1/2″ wide. Made of cellulose acetate (a fancy name for a type of plastic) they are available from FranceLuxe for USD $58.

The site’s actual claim to fame is hair accessories. They have a huge variety of hair clips, pony tail holders, headbands and more (and many are jewelled – yay!). Worth a browse.

Jewel of the day: RJ Graziano Baguette Cuff

Looking at this cuff bracelet by RJ Graziano presented what seemed like an optical illusion. I had a hard time figuring out if the photo showed it open, closed … or WTF?

Turned out it has protrusions on the outside (the baguettes it is named for) that make it look “open” in the photo. Well, to me at least. The site notes, “Two inch hammered brass cuff with hand-soldered settings and prism-cut glass stones.” It comes in gold or black metal and the good news – it’s on sale. Previously $75, it’s now $37.50. Deal!

2014 Grammy Awards: Miranda Lambert in Kimberly McDonald

Yes, thank you, Miranda Lambert, for bringing out these spectacular earrings by Kimberly McDonald. These appear to be made of a stunning centre opal  surrounded by rubies or a similar pinkish red stone. McDonald’s work is known for letting the form of the gems follow the design of the pieces. You can see more of her work at Net-A-Porter. Michelle Obama is also a fan of her work.

Props too to Miranda for the fantastic retro glam hair and perfect makeup. Win win.

2014 Grammy Awards: Children are not accessories, either

It’s Madonna, so well. Madonna. Right? First of all, she’s starting to look a lot like Rachel Zoe. No, this is not a good thing. Not sure what the bedazzled thing covering her right hand is, but this is also not a good thing. And the cross. Which Madonna seems to haul out every time she wants to try to appear edgy.

And poor David Banda. I mean, he’s styling. He looks great. Props for the Maltese cross pin on his lapel and the fedora. But seriously, to haul your kid out onto what appears to be his first red carpet (and the Grammys is photog central) so you can do a mom and me dress-alike? Cheesy, Madge.

The entire look is what might have happened if Michael Jackson and Zoe had (who knows how or why??) reproduced. And the offspring ain’t winning any beauty contests.

Jewel of the day: Bernard Missolin Leather Bunny Ears

Is it very wrong that I would love to see someone (anyone!) at the Academy Awards stroll down the red carpet wearing these fab lambskin bunny ears by Paris-based Bernard Missolin? I mean, they’re all wink, wink, nudge, nudge BUNNY EARS. I am sure whoever would be seated behind Ms. Bunny Ear Wearing Celeb would be kind of bent out of shape at the obstruction of their view, but hey, they have those huge monitors and it gives you a great excuse to get up and gab at the bar. The Oscars are such a long-winded bore fest. Especially with the stunning dearth of jewels.

This little number cost £149 on Missolin’s site. Think of them as an alternative tiara for the rest of us.

Jewel of the day: Swarovski Adventure Hematite Bracelet

Swarovski has this piece listed in their men’s jewellery section, though I could see it easily being worn by women. It’s made of their own jet coloured beads, natural hematite stones and PVD metal. It has an adjustable knotted clasp.

One nice thing about it is it’s potential utility as a Valentine’s Day gift for the man in your life, provided he’s into jewellery, bracelets, etc. Men can be tricky to buy for when it comes to jewellery – the selection tends to be cufflinks, tie tacks, watches, and rings. Some guys are more adventurous than others … so maybe that makes this piece particularly apt. Available from Swarovski for USD $160.

Jewel of the day: Infinity Heart Ring

So you need a Valentine’s Day gift that will make someone go, “Aw!” but haven’t got the financial means to go big? Consider this sweet heart shaped ring, made of 14k rose gold filled wire, shaped into the perennially pleasing heart shape. It’s especially nice for someone younger who might be into jewellery but  whom you don’t want to entrust something expensive.

It’s available on Ebay from CreationsCubed for USD $14.95 (plus shipping, of course).
