Jewel of the day: Darde et Fils Diamond and Pearl Bangle owned by Suzanne Belperron

Jewellery designer Suzanne Belperron’s personal collection was auctioned by Sotheby’s in 2012. The auction house noted, “The personal jewellery collection of arguably the most important female jewellery designer of the 20th century, Suzanne Belperron (1900-1983), will be sold in Geneva on the 14th of May 2012. Comprising over 50 lots, this unprecedented sale features the most significant group of jewels by Belperron ever to appear on the market. This collection includes some of her most celebrated designs and also very intimate items which illustrate her unique style and creative virtuosity.”

The auction catalogue for this gorgeous bracelet explains, “The bangle of stylised wave design embellished with natural and cultured pearls of white and black tint and circular-cut diamonds, inner circumference approximately 150mm, French assay marks, maker’s marks for Darde & Fils.”

Pre-sale estimate was 18,000 — 27,000 Swiss francs; it sold for 56,250 Swiss francs including buyer’s premium.

  1. She is one of my favorite jewelry designers from the 20th century. I was lucky enough to try on her some of her personal jewels such as her engagement ring (tiny–size 3–my pinky) and her magnificent rock crystal and diamond clip when they had several of her pieces previewed at Sotheby’s in New York before the auction in Geneva. Very happy she has gotten her rightful place in history where she firmly belongs among the greats. (I should note I have a Kenneth Jay Lane copy of a Belperron bracelet that I bought last year…the closest I’m ever getting to owning one of her pieces!).
