Jewel of the day: Tory Burch for Fitbit Fret Double Wrap Bracelet

Fitness trackers are everywhere now, from small clip ons to bands that are meant to be worn around the clock. I started using a Polar Flow in December and given the seemingly never ending cold, it’s probably pointed out my housebound sloth more than my activity level.

The problem: the 24 hour versions can look, well, somewhat less than elegant. Enter Tory Burch with a clever double wrap bracelet that conceals a Fitbit Flex in a most elegant way. Voila – stylish bracelet replaces drab fitness monitor.

This is available in a pale pink, this brown version and black for USD $175; Fitbit is sold separately.

Jewel of the day: Lei Van Kash Ayla Midi Ring

I’m all for finding ways to wear more jewellery, or wear it differently. Here is a midi ring by Lei Van Kash, work above the first joint of the finger and not at its base. I’m not sure how comfortable I would find it, but it could give new life to some rings that may be too small to fit as they are traditionally worn.

This is made from sterling silver plated in 22k gold, and shown below both as a midi ring, and a pinky ring.

Jewel of the day: Fernando Jorge Diamond, Topaz, Rose Gold Fusion Cross Earrings

These earrings look gossamer light in terms of construction, but they are fairly large and pack a powerful statement.

Exclusive to Barneys New York, they are by Fernando Jorge, with the following specs: made of polished 18k rose gold set with various sizes of round diamonds and trillion-cut clear topaz; 4.03 carats round white diamonds, 15.30 carats trillion-cut clear topaz. They have a 3 inch drop, and a post (pierced) back.

These sell for USD$30,760.

Jewel of the day: BaubleBar Pearl Orbit Ring

The design of this ring really intrigues me, and it’s kind of surprising it’s from mass jewellery seller BaubleBar. They’ve taken an acrylic pearl and set it inside the band of a 14k gold plated ring (it does come in other metal colours) … it’s very, very cool. Not sure how comfortable it would be to wear, or if your regular ring sizing would be applicable but for USD $32 it’s a risk well worth taking.

Jewel of the day: Stephen Webster Thorn Stem Cuff

I love this bracelet by Stephen Webster, but I also know myself well enough to see this would have a fairly short life on my arm. I am too much of a klutz to not bang this, jar it, or otherwise ruin its delicate form.

The piece is made of 18k white gold set with 1.84 carats of diamonds, with small thorns accenting the criss-crossed circles. For the more graceful among you, this sells for USD $15,670 from Net-A-Porter.

For a dash of fun, here is this pair of earrings set with vintage crystals and owl findings, from Askew London. Available from, they are set with vintage glass stones mixed with vintage jadeite, in 24k gold plated metal.

These are 9 cm long x 3.5cm at their widest point, with a hook fitting for pierced ears.

These sell for £145.

Jewel of the day: Atelier Swarovski Regent Choker

I recently saw a three strand version of this (which I am still trying to track down for purchase – it’s proving to be a bit of jewellery unicorn) and it is one of those things that looks better on than in a picture. The pave crystals just jump to life under light and the irregular, pebble shape of the beads is a really nice form for this.

From Swarovski’s Atelier Core collection, it sells for USD $770; there are matching pieces available.

Jewel of the day: The Lush Life Antiques Deco Penguin Stick Pin

Next to my love of Art Nouveau, how can anyone say no to Art Deco? This charming penguin stick pin is a sweet example of the Deco period. Made in the 1930s, the little bird is rendered in 14k white gold set with diamonds on the body, a 3.8 carat cabochon ruby tummy and a sapphire eye and black enamel wings. It sells for USD $595 from a wonderful dealer, The Lush Life Antiques.

Jewel of the day: Group of antique brooches

I think the Art Nouveau period is one of my favourites. The styles are light and delicate, and the workmanship had to be fine to accommodate the materials – often platinum, diamonds, pearls, and enamels.

Christie’s South Kensington (London) showroom is hosting a jewellery auction on April 14 at which this group of brooches is being sold as a single lot. The pre-sale estimate of £1,500 – £2,000 will make this very tempting for a reseller. The lot is described as, “A group of brooches comprising: an old brilliant and rose-cut diamond bar brooch, circa 1890, 4.5 cm long; a rose-cut diamond brooch of scrolling design with a rose-cut diamond drop, circa 1890, 3.0 cm long; a brooch of openwork scrolling floral design, set with old brilliant-cut diamonds, circa 1890, 5.0 cm long, one small drop deficient; a brooch of stylised bow design, set with rose-cut diamonds, and pear-shaped emerald drop, circa 1890, 3.5 cm wide; a bar brooch with an applied old brilliant-cut diamond lyre, circa 1890, 3.5 cm wide; a bar brooch designed as two whips, set with a diamond horseshoe, circa 1890, 4.5 cm long; and a brooch of stylised bow design, set with brilliant-cut diamonds, the detachable drop set with emeralds and diamonds, 4.0 cm long.”

Though most are fairly undistinguished, I would love to have that centre drop pin. Yum.

Jewel of the day: Mary Louise Designs Beaded Lapis Pendant Necklace

The serene blue of lapis lazuli always makes me think of summer heat. Here, it is used in a pretty pendant by Miami-based Mary Louise Designs. Set in 22k gold plated vermeil, it measures about 27 inches long, closing with a lobster clasp. It’s available from ShopBop for USD $232.
