Jewel of the day: Georg Jensen Moonlight Grapes Earrings

Danish firm Georg Jensen has now embraced the ear crawler trend, with these graduated rounds that go up the outside cartilage of the ear. Called (somewhat puzzlingly) Moonlight Grapes, they are rendered in 18k rose gold. The company describes them thus: “Originating from Georg Jensen designs from the early 1900’s Art Nouveau period, the Moonlight Grapes collection gives the iconic grape motif a modern and contemporary twist. Sculptural and feminine, this collection inspires beauty in the powerful women who wear it.”

These sell for USD$750.

Jewel of the day: Pippa Middleton’s Engagement Ring

Not much is officially known about the ring Pippa Middleton received when she accepted a marriage proposal from James Matthews, other than the fact that it’s big and likely cost a huge sum (it’s been estimated to have cost in the region of £250,000).

There is some speculation it’s vintage or antique, possibly an Art Deco piece, but the octagonal diamond set surround makes me wonder. Art Deco pieces were geometric, but a tiny bit more delicate in design pieces like this, and often incorporated coloured stones to offset the centre diamond (or vice versa).

Regardless, it’s quite the chunk of ice. Congrats to the happy couple. Now all they need are titles bestowed when big sis Kate becomes queen and can nudge William to do something nice for the in-laws.

Jewel of the day: ShopDesignSpark Caged Pearl Bracelet

One of the great things about inexpensive costume jewelry is that it can give you a different look, or mimic fine jewelry, for a fraction of the price gold and gems would cost.

Case in point: this faux pearl and metal bracelet for when you’re feeling a bit high society but don’t have the bucks or inclination to spend on upgrading your look. It sells for USD$28 from Shop Design Spark.

Jewel of the day: Victorian amethyst and gold earrings

Before mourning jewellery shrouded Victorian England in every permutation of black, jewelry was often a bright spot in the wearer’s costume. These pretty earrings are typically Victorian, with what is actually a serpent or 8 motif (when seen from the back), set with amethysts and accented with granulated gold. The seller notes, “Beautiful layered Victorian earrings c 1880s featuring 1.14 carats of amethyst. They are 18ct gold (tested not marked) and have a stunning Etruscan design. The interlocking circles are draped in vine garlands , with the lower rich purple stones representing grapes , the design really stands out as the earrings look wonderfully ornate. The earrings are 3.1 x 1.6 cm in size or 1.22 x 0.63 inches , they have small areas of vintage patina but are overall in very good wearable condition. Your earrings will be sent gift boxed via tracked and insured postage for peace of mind , for simplicity postage is included in the price.”

They are 18k and sell for USD$1,613.34 from UK-based Etsy seller Watson’s Attic.

Jewel of the day: Kwiat Tempo Diamond Ring

The shape is not unusual, nor is a pave diamond ring. But by taking different sizes of diamonds and using them pave set on this v-shaped ring, the visual interest is heightened.

The Kwiat Tempo design features .53 carats of white diamonds; your choice if 18k yellow, white or rose gold setting. This sells for USD$2,500 and there are additional matching pieces in the collection.

Jewel of the day: Sophia B Pendant

This is fun, sparkly and relatively inexpensive and some days, that’s all you need. has this sterling silver and cubic zirconia pendant (they say it’s set with 3.2 carats of CZ). It seems to indicate it comes with an 18 inch long chain, though it’s photographed on a fabric or leather cord. The pendant itself measures 38.1 mm x 47.9 (presuming they are counting the bail as a circular pendant should otherwise have the same height and width).

It’s selling for USD$58.95. pendant

Jewel of the day: Allurez Oval Blue Sapphire and Diamond Ring

So you can’t get Diana/Kate’s sapphire engagement ring out of your head… but you don’t want to spend Windsor-sized bucks (pounds?) to get one.

This ring by Allurez offers a ring that can be customized from 1.5 to 6.4 carats total weight (they don’t specify carat weight for the diamonds and the sapphire separately), from USD$990 to $5,150. Gold is either 14k white or yellow.

Look on the bright side – all of the ring without any of the regal responsibilities and criticism. Win!

Jewel of the day: Sheryl Lowe Diamond and Sterling Curb Chain Bracelet

I didn’t realize that actor Rob Lowe’s wife Sheryl had her own jewelry line. Lest you think she is just “wife of” Neiman Marcus, which retails her line, notes, “Multi-disciplinary designer, Hollywood makeup artist, philanthropist, mother, and wife (of Rob Lowe), Sheryl Lowe first caught the jewelry-designing bug in 2007. When it comes to materials, she thinks outside the jewelry box. Beaded bracelets, drop earrings, cuffs, and pendant necklaces feature unconventional components such as oxidized metal, bone, pyrite, and alligator leather—in addition to mainstays like gold and diamonds. For Sheryl Lowe, business is personal, and she names each piece for a friend, family member, or a place she loves to visit. The aesthetic? Globally inspired, yet distinctively Californian.”

I quite like this curb chain bracelet with diamond pave clasp. It reminds me of both antique and contemporary watch chains, and the diamonds give it a bit of something extra on a clasp that isn’t the usual (somewhat thoughtless) lobster clasp.

Total diamond weight is .73, and the yellowed stones go well with the oxidized look of the piece. It sells for USD$1,100 at Neiman Marcus.

Jewel of the day: Jorge Adeler Opal Drop Earrings

Mmmmm… opals. I think the woman who originally owned these may have liked to have them on while wearing an exuberantly printed Pucci sun dress and lounging tastefully by a pool, cool drink in hand.

These earrings by Jorge Adeler are offered by Oakgem, purveyors of estate jewelry and watches. These black opals are set in white gold and accented with diamonds; they sell for USD$4,650. This calls for a gin and tonic and sunscreen…
